Chapter 6: Saber Rattling

This news shocked me. I knew that it would be bad, but as far as I know, the news hadn’t hit our side of the unit yet, the guards were trying to keep what happened under wraps.

When I walked into the dorm, you could have cut the air with a knife. There was a basketball game going, and the fans, but that was the only noise. The inmates were all separated out. The blacks over in one corner, the Hispanics in another, and the woods off to one side of the dorm. Nobody was talking, or even paying attention to the game. They were just staring at each other. A few were openly holding improvised weapons.

I went to one of the Woods who was there all day.

“What the fuck is going on?” I asked.

He told me the news about the beat down and murder, I acted surprised. He told me that there is going to be a war, and that the whole unit was gearing up. He handed me a note from the head spokesman of our four dorm block.

“Come to rec, we need to find out where we stand on this- Flash”

I ate the note, and got ready for rec.

Out on the yard, there were only white people. I saw Flash, he was talking to a small group of guys by the weight stack. I went over. Flash introduced me to the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood. He was looking for volunteers for the war. He told us how a group of black guys just jumped on a wood and put him in the hospital for no reason and the guy in AD-SEG had simply committed suicide. He told us that we need to take the unit back. Solidarity is needed. We owed him. He said it was my sworn duty as a white person.

I asked how many Aryan Brotherhood members were on the four dorm block. There were three. Just three. In the other dorms, the total number of confirmed Aryan brotherhood members were less than thirty. On average there were about fifteen woods per dorm. They needed us to protect them, and they had backing from all of the other woods in all of the other dorms, but it had to be unanimous.

He was begging at this point.

We went to go decide. We discussed his arguments. It was unanimous.

I told him to go to hell.

He said he would have me dropped.

I told him to drop me and we left.

Back in the dorm, they were all impatiently waiting for the decision. I had a meeting with the other factions. We sat at the table and I informed them of what we decided. They all looked relieved. Sid, the Black spokesman asked what to do about the Aryan Brotherhood.

“Fuck them” I said.

They did. It was beautiful. Aryan Brotherhood members were getting dropped right and left. The woods stayed out of it, that’s what they got for trying to manipulate us into a war. We had another lockdown as a result, but we did not mind. After the guards left, they took anyone suspected of being a member of the Brotherhood.

For six weeks, there was peace and quiet.
